Mary wakes up in bed with Tony Gillingham after their tryst and returns to Downton, where she learns that a building firm want to buy land for a housing estate, to which Robert objects. Some of the family do not recognize her at first, but when they do they are surprised at her elevated status. In series six, the character returns to Downton as a married woman, although she visits the mansion only for one episode.
